Victoria’s fifth Education First Youth Foyer has opened its doors and is about to throw its support behind 40 young people.
Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley officially today opened the site – which will make a huge impact on the lives of Shepparton’s youth.
Education First Youth Foyers provide an alternative intervention to youth homelessness and disadvantage by integrating learning and accommodation to improve life changes through education and employment.
The Youth Foyers are designed for young people who have the capacity to engage in education and training but due to a range of barriers are prevented from doing so.
Construction was completed in June this year and student intake started in August and 20 students have started residency, further students will be introduced over the coming months until capacity is reached.
The Victorian Government has provided nearly $4 million over three years to fund the operation of the Foyer.
This program to tackle homelessness and disadvantage among Shepparton youth is complemented by the Rapid Housing Assistance Fund Initiative, which provided more than $50 million to purchase and lease more than 300 properties to house women and children impacted by family violence.
Rural Housing Network was one of 14 Victorian agencies successful in obtaining funding to take part in the Initiative and will purchase 10 properties, including six in the Greater Shepparton local government area.
The Initiative is part of the Government’s response to the response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
