The Allan Labor Government is getting on with removing the Webster Street level crossing and building a new underpass – cutting congestion for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists by separating them from trains.
The designs released today cover the removal of the Webster Street level crossing in Dandenong and the new road underpass connecting Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham Road.
The project will include a new signalised intersection on Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street, with the new road
taking traffic beneath the rail line before connecting with Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
The new connection will reroute traffic away from the heart of Dandenong’s CBD and keep heavy vehicles off residential streets, in line with the Revitalising Central Dandenong Masterplan.
It is part of a plan to improve traffic flow and connections in the busy industrial area of Greater Dandenong by getting rid of eight level crossings and building a new bridge over the rail line to remove the dead ends at Remington Drive and Pound Road West.
Webster Street will be closed to vehicles at the level crossing in late 2025 while construction is underway on the new road underpass to be completed by 2028.
There will also be work to relocate a major gas pipeline that services the south-east, which has been scheduled for the warmer months when gas demand is lower.

“We’re removing the dangerous and congested Webster Street level crossing and building a new road underpass, which will create a whole new connection for Dandenong, as we get on with making the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines level crossing-free by 2025.

“Dandenong has a thriving city centre that is going to benefit greatly from safer and less congested roads thanks to this level crossing removal, along with another eight around Greater Dandenong.”
