David Bowie is finally here with the opening of the Australian Centre of the Moving Image’s spectacular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, David Bowie is.
At ACMI to preview the exhibition today, Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley said the exhibition is an unprecedented exploration of the creative life and continuing legacy of the man who was born David Robert Jones and went on to inspire generations as the music and cultural icon David Bowie.
The exhibition features more than 300 objects from the cultural chameleon’s personal archives, including lyric sheets, photographs, rare videos, filmed live performances and interviews with Bowie and his key collaborators.
The Australian exclusive exhibition is funded through the Andrews Labor Government’s Major Events program. will give visitors an insight into Bowie’s creative process and explore his career and influence on pop culture, as a musician, stage performer, writer and actor.
Visitors will see handwritten lyrics to some of Bowie’s biggest hits, early album and concert tour designs and art, and examine more than 50 original costumes, including his Ziggy Stardust bodysuits.
The exhibition, which was first shown at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, has been seen by over one million people during a world tour that has also taken in Toronto, Sao Paolo, Berlin, Chicago and Paris. The Melbourne exhibition will be the biggest yet, including additional materials from the Bowie archives and special loans from Australian fans and collectors.
Alongside the exhibition, ACMI is hosting a diverse program of talks, film screenings and workshops for all ages, as well as special late night openings each Thursday and Friday featuring music and live performances.
