Crossing Works To Get Ararat Students To School Safely

28 June 2019

Hundreds of Ararat schoolkids will have a safer journey to and from school with upgrades to pedestrian crossings on the city’s busy Barkly Street thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

A new painted median and dedicated pedestrian crossing points will provide a safer path for hundreds of students heading to and from Marian College and St Mary’s Primary School.

The Labor Government has invested $100,000 into the project to combat the dangers posed by increasing levels of traffic, wide traffic lanes and limited crossing opportunities.

The Government has been working closely with Ararat Rural City Council to deliver these important upgrades on Barkly Street, which build on the new electronic speed signs that were installed to boost safety in the area earlier this year.

These latest works have been funded as part of the $100 million Safer Cyclist and Pedestrian Fund which aims to improve infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians across Victoria.

The fund is part of the $1.4 billion Towards Zero Action Plan which aims to reduce the number of lives lost on our roads to 200 or fewer and decrease serious injuries by 15 per cent by 2020.
