The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring all Victorians have access to high quality training no matter their background, through the Skills First TAFE Community Service Fund.
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney joined Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke and apprentices at Chisholm Institute in Frankston this morning to announce the TAFE would receive $2.6 million from the fund.
The Community Service Fund helps TAFEs keep students on track to finish their training and secure a job by funding counselling and welfare services, as well as language, literacy and numeracy programs.
Chisholm will use the funding to provide a range of academic and wellbeing support services, as well as programs to help students complete their training, including one to help young parents finish their schooling and get a job.
The announcement of the community service funding marks the launch of National Skills Week 2017, which highlights the pathways available through Vocational Education and Training.
Ms Tierney also used the visit to announce the appointment of leading national construction company ADCO as the builder on the redevelopment of Chisholm’s Frankton campus – Victoria’s largest TAFE infrastructure project.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2018 and is classified as a Victorian Major Project – meaning apprentices, trainees or engineering cadets must undertake 10 per cent of the work.
Through Skills First, the Labor Government is overhauling Victoria’s training and TAFE system, guaranteeing funding to secure the future of TAFE and making sure Victorians have the skills for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
