The Carroll Labor Government is removing level crossings in the west – making journeys faster and safer.

An alliance comprising Acciona, WSP, Metro Trains Melbourne and VIDA Rail has been awarded the contract to remove the boom gates at Anderson Street and Hudsons Road.

Anderson Street is one of the most dangerous level crossings remaining on Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network.

It has seen one fatality and four serious injuries since 2006, and 26 near misses since 2016.

More than 6,000 pedestrians use the crossing each day, with boom gates down for half of the two-hour morning peak.

Along Hudsons Road, more than 6,600 vehicles use the crossing each day, many waiting for extended periods during the morning peak, causing delays for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Removing the two level crossings means safer journeys, less waiting, and fewer missed trains for locals.

Four rounds of community engagement have been held, and early designs for the Anderson Street crossing were released in May.

Two new accessible underpasses will keep pedestrians and cyclists connected:

  • Anderson Street: stairs and two lifts on each side of the rail line for cyclists and people with prams, mobility aids and wheelchairs
  • Murray and Goulburn streets: stairs and ramps for another safe and accessible crossing.

The project will also create new open space on Anderson Street for outdoor dining, seating and public artwork.

Following community feedback, the Level Crossing Removal will feature increased car parking – improving access to the busy Yarraville Village precinct.

The project will deliver recommendations from an economic assessment commissioned by Maribyrnong City Council, projected to boost trader sales by up to 12 per cent.

The new Spotswood Station will open in 2028.

Final designs will be released, and construction will start next year, with the project complete in 2029.

Jess Wilson and the Liberals have announced they will stop this important work as part of their $40 billion of cuts.
