Construction Boost For Victoria’s Powerhouse Economy

Victoria is doing the heavy lifting for the nation with the latest data on construction from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showing Victoria shooting ahead – while national figures go backwards.

The figures released today show Victoria’s engineering construction is 11.9 per cent up across the year, as the national figures plummets by 25.9 per cent.

The Andrews Labor Government’s strong infrastructure pipeline continues to produce dividends, with projects like level crossing removals boosting economic growth, increasing productivity and creating jobs.

Victoria’s growth during the year was the highest of all the states. Resource rich Queensland and Western Australia recorded the biggest contractions in engineering construction work.

This strong growth in Victoria continues despite the Turnbull Government short-changing Victorians and refusing to provide our fair share when it comes to infrastructure funding.

Despite being home to 25 per cent of the nation’s population, Victoria will receive only 9 per cent in national infrastructure funding for the 2016-17 year.

By contrast, NSW will receive 40 per cent.

The engineering construction numbers are set against a backdrop of a surging Victorian economy that is leading the nation in economic and jobs growth.

Since the Labor Government was elected in November 2014, more than 176,000 new Victorian jobs have been created – with about 117,000 of those full time.
