Labor has appointed Victoria’s first Commissioner for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism.
Minister for Police Anthony Carbines today congratulated Dr Kelly Mischel on her appointment.
Dr Mischel will lead the delivery of Victoria’s Strategy for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism 2025–28.
This is a long‑term approach to prevent radicalisation and stop harm before it occurs.
With almost two decades of experience across the justice system and countering violent extremism, Dr Mischel is a nationally and internationally respected leader in the field.
Her background in forensic psychology and strong networks across government, communities and frontline services will support a prevention‑focused approach to keeping Victorians safe.
Dr Mischel will oversee early intervention programs, strengthen partnerships with communities, and coordinate efforts across government as part of the Strategy.
The appointment follows the anti-Semitic terror attack in Bondi, which claimed 15 innocent lives and came amid a deeply troubling rise in racist and antisemitic incidents nationwide.
In response, the Allan Labor Government released Victoria’s strategy as part of its five‑point plan to combat antisemitism, stop extremism early and keep Victorians safe.
This included stronger hate speech laws, new police powers following terrorism events and strengthening gun laws.
The five-point plan builds on Victoria’s nation‑leading anti‑hate reforms delivered over the past year, including banning terrorist symbols, strengthening anti‑vilification laws and tackling harmful online content.
Combating antisemitism and violent extremism is critical to protecting all Victorians and upholding Australia’s way of life.
These protections belong to every Victorian and make our state safer, stronger and more united.
