Camperdown Theatre Gets The Royal Treatment

19 September 2018

Camperdown theatre in south west Victoria is set for new and improved equipment so that it can continue to serve as an important social and cultural hub thanks to funding from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford awarded a $50,000 grant from the Stronger Regional Communities Plan to Corangamite Shire Council in the Victorian Parliament today so that the Theatre Royal can install the new equipment.

The important upgrades will include permanent sound and lighting equipment, new projection equipment as well as new tables and comfortable new seating for patrons.

Theatre Royal is a much-loved hub for arts and cultural entertainment in Corangamite Shire, but its existing facilities are no longer meeting the needs of modern productions.

Currently, theatre users are required to provide their own sound and lighting or hire equipment at a cost of up to $2,500. This expense jeopardises the sustainability of theatre and limits the kind of shows Camperdown can attract.

The improvements will strengthen the community by developing a facility that can provide ongoing economic benefits for Camperdown.

The project has strong support from the community, with funding provided from two local schools and the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

The Stronger Regional Communities Plan aims to support rural and regional towns to attract families and young people to live and work by investing in community-led projects that make regional Victoria a better place to live and work.

Community groups, not for profit organisations, individual businesses, and industry alliances are all eligible to apply for funding for projects that will create stronger communities.
