Building Better Schools – In Richmond And Across Victoria

30 November 2018

The Andrews Labor Government isn’t wasting a minute building the Education State, with nine new public schools on track to open next year and work now underway on a further 11 new schools that will open in 2020.

Minister for Education James Merlino today joined Member for Richmond Richard Wynne to inspect works at the second campus of Richmond High School – part of the Labor Government’s school building boom that will see 100 new government schools open over the next eight years.

The state-of-the-art four-level building will cater for up to 650 students and open for the beginning of the 2019 school year.

Designed by architecture firm Hayball and built by ADCO Constructions, the Griffiths Street campus features flexible spaces that can be adapted to suit a range of educational uses, as well as landscaped outdoor spaces for learning, gathering and play.

The new $43 million inner city vertical school has been developed in two stages, with the first cohort of Year 7 students starting at the beginning of 2018 at the Gleadell Street Campus next door.

Over the past four years, the Labor Government has delivered more than 1,300 school upgrades and supported more than 5,000 construction jobs for Victorians.

That building boom will continue over the coming years, with the Government today appointing builders to start delivering 11 schools across the state that will open in 2020.

45 new government schools will open by 2022, and 100 new schools by 2026 – ensuring every child has a great local school and great start in life.

The Labor Government has invested more than $3.8 billion to improve classrooms, upgrade facilities and build new schools across the state.
