Building Better Primary Schools, Faster

27 August 2018

Victorian workers, apprentices and businesses are playing a key role shaping the Education State – working on and supplying materials for much needed school upgrades.

Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll today joined Member for Sunbury Josh Bull and the students of Tullamarine Primary School to tour the new buildings, which will be completed this week.

Within 10 months of announcing the $4.57 million upgrade, the ageing facilities have been demolished and replaced with state-of-the-art new classrooms, administration facilities and student toilets.

The Andrews Labor Government is using modular construction technology to provide new, asbestos-free classrooms for Victorian schools much faster than traditional construction methods.

The Asbestos Removal Program is a Local Jobs First Strategic Project, mandating 90 per cent local content requirement for the permanent modular school building program and 95 per cent local content for the asbestos removal and reinstatement program.

Local companies, like Sensum and Brand Architects, have contributed to the project, as well as ten apprentices in trades such as electrical, plumbing and carpentry.

Following demolition and asbestos removal works, the construction and installation of the modular facilities started in June and will be complete by the end of August – which is less than three months.

Traditional construction methods would see the build time take anywhere from 12-18 months. Modular buildings are made off-site and delivered to the school, reducing the disruption to the school and on-site safety risks.
