- $26.35 million works getting underway to deliver important upgrades to Warren Street
- Construction will include four new flood relief bridges, dedicated residential service roads and turning lanes at intersections and a roundabout connection to new Murray River crossing
- Major work on Stage 1 now complete at Murray Valley Highway and Warren Street
Work is getting underway on the second stage of the Echuca-Moama Bridge project to deliver important upgrades to Warren Street through Echuca.
The Australian, Victorian and New South Wales governments today announced the start of works for Stage 2 of the project following the completion of major work on a new roundabout at Murray Valley Highway.
The $26.35 million package of works for Stage 2 includes the complete reconstruction and widening of Warren Street, as well as four new flood relief bridges and a roundabout connection, which will serve as the link from Warren Street to the new Murray River crossing.
Locals will also benefit from safer and easier access to properties through new service roads and extended turning lanes into Homan Street and the Echuca cemetery.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the upgrade of Warren Street is important for the local community.
“With a new Murray River crossing on the way, the upgrade of Warren Street has been carefully planned to ensure it will provide a safe and reliable main link to the new bridge,” Mr McCormack said.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the changes will also improve access and safety for locals through new service roads, extended turning lanes and new walking and cycling paths.
“Upgrading Warren Street will better connect the Murray Valley Highway to Echuca and the new river crossing – making it easier for Victorians to do business and get around safely,” Mr Donnellan said.
State Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said part of this work includes building four new flood relief bridges, replacing the current narrow bridges which are almost 80 years old.
“Not only will this work boost safety along Warren Street, it will boost capacity and allow more vehicles to travel through the heart of our town,” Mr Gepp said.
NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the upgrade will provide wider economic and travel benefits across the region.
“Building this new Murray River crossing will improve journey times between these twin cities, boost the cross-border economy and provide 400 direct and more than 1,000 indirect jobs.”
The Ministers thanked the community for its patience throughout the ongoing closure.
Stage 2 works on Warren Street are due for completion in late 2019.
The $280 million Echuca Moama Bridge Project is jointly funded by the Australian, Victorian and New South Wales Governments.
