The new pedestrian bridge at Bendigo Station is now complete, signalling the latest milestone in the Andrews Labor Government’s $15.8 million commitment to improving access, safety and connectivity at both Bendigo and Eaglehawk stations.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan today visited Bendigo Station to mark the opening of the new bridge, which is fully accessible for all passengers, including those with disability and mobility needs.
The new bridge features air-conditioned lifts, stairs, ramps and handrails, along with CCTV and lighting for added public safety.
The pedestrian overpass was originally installed late last year, with construction teams working through the night using a special crane to lift it into place.
The bridge ramps were opened soon after, enabling passengers with accessibility needs to travel between platforms, as the finishing touches were applied to the stairs and lifts
People with mobility aids, passengers with luggage and families with young children and prams can now easily transfer between platforms and simply connect with other forms of transport. Before the bridge was installed, people with disability and other mobility requirements had to be escorted by V/Line staff between platforms.
Further planned Bendigo Station upgrades will see improvements to the station building, including the waiting area, toilets and customer service areas, to enhance commuter comfort.
Upgrades to Eaglehawk Station will also be completed this year, including an extended platform for longer trains, new landscaping, footpaths and a 60-space car park, with accessible parking and pick up and drop off zones.
These upgrades complement the Government’s Regional Network Development Plan and its $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival, delivering more investment and more jobs in regional Victoria.
The Labor Government is also investing $49.6 million in the next stage of Bendigo Metro, which includes building new stations at Goornong, Raywood and Huntly, as well as upgrading track on the Bendigo line to allow trains to run every 40 minutes during off peak times.
