Bendigo Over The Moon With Discovery Centre Upgrades

22 June 2018

Kids can discover and enjoy the wonders of science at the upgraded Bendigo Discovery Science and Technology Centre’s auditorium thanks to a $220,000 boost from the Andrews Labor Government.

Premier Daniel Andrews today joined Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards to tour the Centre, which helps engage kids in STEM programs and learning.

Bendigo Discovery Centre has used part of this funding boost to increase its engagement with families with young children and early childhood services. This includes employing a specialist early childhood teacher to redevelop the space for youngsters, and create educational programs for the community and early childhood services.

As part of the funding boost, $55,000 has been provided to upgrade the auditorium to include new audio-visual equipment, lighting, insulation, paint, carpets and curtains to enhance the space, and support the educational work of the Centre.

Established in 1995 as Australia’s first science and technology centre outside of a major metropolitan area, the Bendigo Discovery Centre provides interactive exhibits and tailored planetarium programs linked to the science curriculum and broader educational outcomes to over 30,000 visitors per year.

The centre has partnered with La Trobe University and Bendigo TAFE to build the confidence of future early childhood educators and teachers in incorporating science and technology in their teaching.

Pre-service teachers undertake projects that provide concrete experiences of STEM activities and generate enthusiasm for using STEM content in early childhood centres and primary school classrooms.

The Labor Government’s Education State is making sure all students are supported to get a great education, stay in school and learn the skills they need for the future.
