80,000 Jobs And A First-Class Community For Fishermans Bend

20 October 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is righting Matthew Guy’s wrongs by getting on with the largest urban renewal project in Australia.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne today joined Member for Albert Park Martin Foley at the construction site of the Montague Community Park to release the draft Fishermans Bend Framework and planning controls.

As Planning Minister under the former Liberal Government, Matthew Guy gave Fishermans Bend developers and Liberal Party donors a windfall, but gave no regard to building a community.

We’re fixing his mess. The Labor Government’s Fishermans Bend Framework will create the jobs, schools, open space and public transport connections the community needs – but Mr Guy ignored.

Proper planning is all about creating blueprints today for tomorrow’s communities. The Framework sets out blueprints for tram alignments and a future metro station to be considered as the neighbourhood grows.

The Framework includes plans for:

• 80,000 local jobs
• Four primary schools, a public secondary school and a community hub
• Open space spanning the equivalent of two thirds the size of Docklands
• Four AFL-sized ovals, six soccer pitches and eight outdoor courts
• Proper planning controls that spell an end to a free-for-all jungle of high rises

The planning controls have also been released for consultation, with submissions to be heard before an independent Panel.

The Fishermans Bend urban renewal project is the largest urban renewal project in Australia. It will boost affordable housing close to the city and offer families living in the growing postcode the community they deserve.

The community will now have their say on what Fishermans Bend will look like at public consultations over the next eight weeks. For more information or to view the Framework, visit fishermansbend.vic.gov.au.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne

“Matthew Guy made his developer mates rich but ignored the needs of a growing community at Fishermans Bend. We’re getting the planning right to give families the neighbourhood that they deserve.”

“This is the largest urban renewal project in Australia. It’s an ambitious and innovative project that’s going to create thousands of jobs, new parks and sports ovals, schools and public transport as the local population grows.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Albert Park Martin Foley

“Matthew Guy’s reckless disregard for our community was appalling. He was too busy giving his donor mates a leg up to think about schools, parks, public transport or the other services communities need. We’re fixing that mess.”
