Wonthaggi Secondary College Unveils New Campus

31 January 2020

Bass Coast students now have world-class facilities to learn in, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government, as they join more than one million of their peers in going back to school for 2020.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale today officially opened the new $32.7 million Wonthaggi Secondary College an ultra-modern senior campus for Year 10–12 students, which includes a new sports stadium for locals.

Students and teachers will benefit from new outdoor learning areas, a central plaza, library, and specialist
facilities for visual arts, graphics, materials technology and science.

The multi-sport stadium, which includes three competition-grade basketball courts, will be shared with the
community.

In addition, the Labor Government announced last August that an additional new junior campus for Year 7-9 students will be built in San Remo to cater for local families.

An additional two bus services are running from Phillip Island to Wonthaggi Secondary College this year, ensuring students have the school transport they need. The Labor Government has delivered $31 million for the new campus, with Bass Coast Shire Council contributing $1.7 million towards the costs of the new shared stadium.

Under the Labor Government’s school building boom, a total of 100 new schools will open by 2026, ensuring every child can access a great local school where they can achieve their best. The Labor Government has invested $6.1 billion to deliver more than 1,400 school upgrades and supporting more than 7,500 construction jobs for Victorians.

And from day one of this school year, students at all Victorian government schools will be required to switch off their mobile phones and securely store them from the first bell to last bell during each school day.

This policy will remove a major distraction from our classrooms, so that teachers can teach and students can learn in a more focused, positive and supported environment. There has been positive results in a number of schools in Victoria that already have similar policies in place.
