Weekend Construction Blitz To Widen Monash Freeway

02 February 2017

Construction on the Andrews Labor Government’s Monash Freeway Upgrade is ramping up this weekend with the freeway closing overnight to allow for critical works to be done.

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead with the Monash Freeway closed outbound between Heatherton Road and Belgrave Hallam Road each night from midnight to 7am from Saturday 4 to Monday 6 February 2017.

The five kilometre section will be closed while beams are lifted in to widen the bridge and add an extra lane at the significant bottleneck where the South Gippsland Freeway joins the Monash Freeway.

Four beams, each 40 metres long and weighing 80 tonnes, will be trucked in from Kilmore where they were manufactured and then lifted into place on the bridge that crosses over the South Gippsland Freeway.

An alternative route will be in place during construction using Heatherton Road and Belgrave Hallam Road.

The Monash Freeway Upgrade will see more than 30 kilometres of extra lanes added while minimising the impact of construction on motorists.

It will address major bottlenecks by adding a lane in each direction between EastLink and Clyde Road in Berwick, along with smart technology and ramp upgrades, improving traffic flow and safety for motorists.

Construction on the Monash Freeway Upgrade is well underway with the new lanes will be open to traffic in 2018.

Quotes attributed to Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan

“We’re getting on with widening the Monash to get Victorians home safer and sooner every day.”

“We’re alerting drivers to these works and while this may cause some minor delays and disruption, every effort will be made to get the work done as quickly as possible and return traffic to normal.”

“We thank motorists for their patience, and for continuing to drive safely in the construction zone while these critical works are underway.”
