Students in Moorabbin will get the skills they need for good, secure jobs as part of the biggest change to TAFE and skills training in Victoria’s history.
Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney today joined Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos at Holmesglen TAFE in Moorabbin to meet students who will benefit from the Andrews Labor Government’s free TAFE initiative.
Holmesglen TAFE currently offers 12 TAFE and three pre-apprenticeships courses that will be free under the Labor Government’s $172 million investment in the Victorian Budget 2018/19.
Across the state, 30 priority TAFE and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses will be made free, with courses focusing on the skills our state needs. It means eligible students at Holmesglen TAFE Moorabbin campus will be able to take up training in building and construction, nursing, community services and engineering with no tuition fees.
The Labor Government’s record investment in major road and rail projects, new schools and hospitals, support for Victorians living with disability and historic action to curb family violence has created a massive demand for skilled workers across Victoria.
More than ever, the skills required for these jobs are learned at TAFE. This Budget will transform our state’s skills training and make sure it’s Victorians who are first in line for these good, new jobs.
In addition to these free priority courses, the Budget includes $303.8 million to create more than 30,000 new subsidised training places.
The Budget is also modernising apprenticeships, with $43.8 million to revamp learning materials, ensure consistent industry standards with new independent assessments, and bring back trade papers to recognise these qualifications.
This is a Budget that invests in the projects we need and the people we need to deliver them.
