Supporting A Safer Geelong And Bellarine

24 August 2018

Geelong and Bellarine locals will benefit from safer community facilities as part of the latest round of Community Safety Fund grants, funded by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Police Lisa Neville today announced almost $30,000 in funding for four projects in the Geelong and Bellarine area, which include:

  • $8,300 to Neighbourhood Watch in Leopold to deliver a public awareness campaign to reduce the risk of residential theft, and theft of and from motor vehicles. Brochures encouraging residents to lock their homes, cars, letterboxes, garages and garden sheds will be delivered to 5,200 homes across the suburb
  • New residents will receive welcome kits from real estate agents, with a brochure, key ring and small padlock for their letterbox. The organisation will host displays in the Leopold Gateway Plaza to raise awareness about the need to secure personal property, homes and vehicles
  • $10,000 to upgrade lighting at the Diversitat Northern Community Hub
  • $2,745 to install sensor lighting at the Highton Scout Hall
  • $8,500 to install an alarm system and flood lights at the Anakie Football Netball Club.

Victorian councils and community groups will share in almost $640,000 for 100 projects across the state through the 2018–19 round of Community Safety Fund grants.

The grants provide up to $10,000 in funding to councils and not-for-profit groups for projects that help prevent crime and support people to feel safer and more engaged in their communities.

The Community Safety Grants are part of the government’s $25 million investment in its Community Crime Prevention Program to improve community safety and prevent crime. This builds on the $19.4 million invested in the program in 2016–17.

The Labor Government saved these grants after the Liberals cut their funding, the Government has a track-record in investing in crime prevention projects that are supported by the community and Victoria Police. For further information about the grants visit crimeprevention.vic.gov.au.
