Statement On Corrections Commissioner Jan Shuard

24 November 2017

Corrections Victoria Commissioner Jan Shuard has informed me of her intention to retire in early 2018.

Jan has had a long and distinguished career in the corrections system, both here and in Western Australia having started as a prison officer in the early 1980s.

She was appointed Corrections Victoria Commissioner in December 2012 after serving as Deputy Commissioner since 2006.

Jan has displayed tremendous leadership over the last five years, successfully leading Corrections Victoria through a period of considerable change, including the expansion of the prison system in Victoria.

She has made a significant contribution to the development and implementation of initiatives in a number of areas, particularly in the post sentence supervision of offenders, an area extremely important to community safety.

With more than three decades experience in the justice system – her retirement is a great loss to the Victorian community.

I want to thank Jan for all the work she has done in helping keep Victorians safe while also helping offenders break the cycle of crime.

Jan will finish as Commissioner on January 11 next year.
