Search Starts For Footscray Hospital Builder

17 June 2019

The world-class Footscray Hospital being built by the Andrews Labor Government is a step closer, with a search for the consortium to deliver the flagship project now underway.

Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos today announced an Expression of Interest period will open later this week to secure a partner for the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the $1.5 billion hospital.

Ms Mikakos also announced the locals in Melbourne’s west who will sit on a Community Consultative Committee and ensure the local community has a big say over the project. The Committee will be chaired by Member for Footscray Katie Hall.

The Footscray Hospital will feature 504 beds and will be built next to Victoria University’s Footscray Park Campus, replacing the current hospital that was built in the 1950s.

The project is being delivered by the Labor Government as a Public Private Partnership. It will open in 2025, and create up to 2,000 jobs during construction and the operating phases of the new hospital.

The bigger and better Footscray Hospital will cut wait times and allow almost 15,000 additional patients to be treated and 20,000 additional patients to be seen at the emergency department each year.

Families in Melbourne’s west deserve the very best care. The new Footscray Hospital will allow up to 17,000 local residents to get the world-class treatment and care that they need closer to home, without having to visit hospitals in the city.

It’s just one of the projects funded as part of the Labor Government’s massive $3.8 billion pipeline of hospital projects to ensure patients get the very best care, when they need it most.
