Safer Crossings For St Georges Road

The Andrews Labor Government will reopen all of the median crossings on St Georges Road by the end of the year and conduct a comprehensive safety review of the key arterial route.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan today announced that as work is completed on Melbourne Water’s M40 pipeline upgrade, all five of the median crossings, closed as part of the works, will be progressively reopened.

Safety will be improved at the reopened median crossings with raised and textured pavement to improve visibility.

New line markings and signs will ensure cars give way to bicycles and trams and some vegetation will be removed to improve sight lines.

The decision to reopen the median crossings follows significant consultation with locals and St Georges Road users which found strong community support for reopening.

The Labor Government has invested $50,000 to investigate safety improvements along the corridor between Miller Street and Merri Parade.

St Georges Road carries more than 38,000 vehicles a day and is one of Melbourne’s busiest cycling routes.

The Labor Government has also announced a new connection to the Darebin-Yarra Trail connecting cyclists and walkers in Alphington to more than 600km of off roads trails.

The Farm Road Link will connect Alphington to the upgraded Darebin Trail providing a safer off road option to commute to the city and other major employment centres.
