A new state-of-the-art road policing hub will put police in the driver’s seat, helping them to crack down on dangerous road users and keep Victorians safe on our roads.
Minister for Police Lisa Neville today joined police at the official opening of the new Road Policing Crime and Operations Facility at Notting Hill, in Melbourne’s South East.
The hub brings together more than 100 sworn officers from expert road policing teams including the Major Collision Investigation Unit, the Heavy Vehicle Unit, Heavy Vehicle Investigation Unit and the State Highway Patrol – South-East Office.
The units previously worked from five separate locations and the move will allow greater flexibility of rostering, tasking and deployment.
Utilising the latest technology and equipment, the units will work together to investigate incidents, target dangerous drivers and ensure everyone is using the roads responsibly.
At any one time, up to 24 Victoria Police Academy graduates will also be able to undertake training at the facility. This will help equip our new Probationary Constables, and in turn the force, with even stronger road policing knowledge and technical skills.
Every two hours someone is killed or suffers from serious, life-changing injuries as a result of incidents on Victorian roads.
The Andrews Labor Government’s record $2 billion investment in Victoria Police, includes more than $43 million to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology across all highway patrol cars to get bad drivers off our roads.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras can scan up to 2,500 number plates in an hour, checking for unlicensed drivers, unregistered or stolen vehicles, drivers with interlock conditions, and motorists with outstanding warrants.
The Labor Government has also invested more than $1.1 billion for Towards Zero, which seeks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
