Putting Oakleigh Athletes First

01 December 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is putting families first by building a new sports stadium and gymnastics hall in Oakleigh.

Minister for Sport John Eren today joined Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos to announce the Labor Government would make the Oakleigh Recreation Centre Indoor Stadium and Gymnastics Centre a reality.

We will provide $3 million to build five courts for basketball, netball, volleyball, table tennis, soccer and badminton. A new show court will include seating for 800 spectators.

The Centre will become home to the Waverley Gymnastics Centre. The club is more than 1,400 members and 30 coaches – and it’s growing. We’re giving young gymnasts the state-of-the-art home they deserve.

The facility will come complete with 2000 square metres of activity space for gymnasts of all ages and abilities. It means the Centre can host national competitions, education programs for juniors and school holiday events.

The Waverley Gymnastics Centre is one of Victoria’s premium gymnastics clubs, but it has outgrown its current home in Mount Waverley. The Centre is home to a range of elite gymnasts, including dual Olympian Larissa Miller and a trio of Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holders.

It’s all possible thanks to our Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, which is changing people’s lives for the better. We were elected to put people first, and by building first class facilities for grassroots sport we are doing just that.

Victoria is the sporting state, and it doesn’t happen by chance. Our $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund is helping communities all over the state update tired grounds and build the facilities they need.

The project is being funded in partnership with the Commonwealth Government, the City of Monash and the Waverley Gymnastics Centre.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport John Eren

“We’ve listened to the Waverley Gymnastics Centre. The flagship club is growing at rapid rates and deserves a world-class facility. That’s exactly what we’re delivering, because we put people first.”

“For too long, basketballers and netballers have had to take to the court late at night to get a game. We’re spelling an end to that, because it changes people’s lives for the better.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos

“Local gymnasts have fought hard for a new facility. This is their victory, and it’s our small part in perhaps uncovering the next Australian Olympian from our own backyard.”

“We were elected to put people first, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
