Tourists and locals can look forward to more reliable journeys, with vital works to prevent road closures due to landslips on the state’s most iconic tourist routes thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the $32.8 million program through the Building Works package will prevent landslips and support jobs on the ground and in the supply chain.
This will include works on key south-west routes including Princes Highway West, Colac-Lavers Hill Road, Deans Marsh-Lorne Road, Cobden-Port Campbell Road, Timboon-Nullawarre Road and Timboon-Colac Road.
A raft of proactive stabilisation works will be delivered including rock netting, catch fences and earthworks, to provide safer journeys for people travelling on these roads and prevent road closures that may lead to communities becoming isolated in the event of a landslip.
It’s all part of a $124 million Victorian Government investment to fix more roads and help impacted communities get back on their feet, with fast-tracked upgrades set to create or support almost 300 regional Victorian jobs.
The landslip prevention works are expected to commence within the next six months and are scheduled for completion before the end of the 2020/21 financial year.
All projects will comply with the local jobs first policy, ensuring communities hit hardest by the impacts of the coronavirus will benefit from the additional investment.
