Oliver And Olivia The Top Baby Names For 2018

03 January 2019

Olivia and Oliver reign supreme as Victoria’s best loved baby names, according to figures released by the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Attorney-General Jill Hennessy today met baby William, just one of the 436 Williams born in 2018. William came in third on the list of the most popular boys’ names.

Oliver is once again the most popular boys’ name for the fourth year running, while Jack, William, Noah and Thomas all feature in the top five for the second year in a row. Leo, Henry and Charlie are the new entrants in the top 10.

Olivia overtook Charlotte to become the most popular girls’ name, while Amelia, Mia and Ava rounded out the top five.

Matilda was the only new entrant to the top 10, perhaps due to the 30-year anniversary of Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s novel, Matilda.

For the boys, Charlie maintains its popularity for another year, tying with Liam for ninth place, while the 295 baby boys named Ethan have helped the name rise two places to number eight.

Chloe returns to the top 10 for newborn girls, while Grace slipped one spot from eighth to ninth.
