Next Stage Of CBD Security Works To Get Underway

04 January 2019

More than 100 permanent barriers and bollards will be installed at Flinders Street Station and Princes Bridge under the next stages of the Andrews Labor Government’s $50 million Melbourne security upgrades.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville today joined Lord Mayor Sally Capp and Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Deb Abbott to announce the works would begin next Wednesday.

The Flinders Street Station works include the installation of 20 bollards and an eight-metre long reinforced barrier, and the completion of the 130 square metre forecourt expansion under the iconic clocks. This is in addition to 35 bollards that were installed in December 2018.

The pedestrian crossing in front of Flinders Street Station and Young & Jackson will be expanded to improve pedestrian flow for around 25,000 people who use the intersection at peak times every day.

The temporary water-filled barriers on Princes Bridge will be replaced with 88 reinforced blocks, following extensive consultation with Heritage Victoria, heritage architects, Victoria Police and security experts.

These works will significantly improve safety and ease congestion for pedestrians in one of the city’s busiest high-profile public spaces.

The Labor Government has invested more than $50 million to fund priority security improvements, including permanent physical protections at nine locations and a new public address and CCTV system.

Permanent bollards have already been installed at Bourke Street Mall, while concept designs have been completed at the other six sites with works due to begin in 2019.

The public address and CCTV system upgrade is being rolled out across 95 locations, with the majority of sites now fully installed and operational.
