New Sports Hub Making Tracks In Bacchus Marsh

11 April 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is transforming Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve into a community sporting hub, delivering a new BMX circuit, cricket pitch and two soccer ovals.

Minister for Sport John Eren was on site to break ground on two projects today, made possible by $200,000 funding from the Labor Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Local sport is booming in Bacchus Marsh and a growing population is putting pressure on existing sports facilities.

The land inside the racecourse was under-utilised and provides a prime space for much needed sporting infrastructure.

For years, the Bacchus Marsh BMX Club has had to make do with sub-standard facilities with members travelling to other towns to train on proper circuits – Labor is changing that.

The upgrade will give members a BMX race and training facility built to international competition standard and allow the club to grow its membership, host competitions and unearth the next generation of champions.

The Labor Government will also develop a cricket oval with hard wicket, two soccer pitches, irrigation and fencing inside the racecourse.

The competition grade cricket oval will ease pressure on local grounds and enable local clubs to play their home games in Bacchus March, rather than making the trip to other towns for every match.

The two soccer pitches will give local clubs greater flexibility and room to play during the busy winter season. As it stands, there are no high-quality soccer facilities in the Moorabool Shire.

The Labor Government’s $120 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund is upgrading reserves like this one so more grassroots clubs across the state can cater for growing demand and be more competitive.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport John Eren

“We’re proud to be building a sporting hub in the heart of Bacchus Marsh – local clubs have been crying out for better facilities and we’re getting it done.”

“These upgrades will allow more locals to ride, bat or kick goals close to home, and give clubs a boost to grow and win silverware.”
