Melbourne Cable Park To Boost South-Eastern Suburbs

24 February 2017

The new $6-million Melbourne Cable Park will generate tourism, create jobs and increase liveability in the fast-growing south-eastern suburbs.

The Bangholme community will benefit from improved facility which is located on 11.63 hectares of Crown land managed by the Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning (DELWP).

It’s a practical example of how the Andrews Labor Government is supporting local businesses meet the needs of communities in our fast-growing outer suburbs.

Melbourne Cable Park recently opened its Aqua Fun Park in January, employing 58 staff, with plans to add up to 30 more in the coming months. The Cable Park is anticipated to generate $60 million of gross revenue in the first year of operation.

Facilities and activities planned to operate at the cable park include:

  • cable water sports (water skiing, wake boarding and kite boarding (towed), knee boarding)
  • kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and the Aqua Fun Park
  • high ropes adventure challenge courses with over 90 graded challenge activities, and fitness track
  • training rooms and facilities, equipment rental and retail, toilets and showers
  • a central reception area, café and viewing balconies, function and exhibition spaces

The Cable Park is being developed to be an energy-efficient facility and will use very little electricity to operate. The main building is the subject of a Melbourne Energy Institute (MEI) research project, and the organisation awarded seed funding to the park project in 2016.

The proposal is for MEI and partners to design and operate a 120 kW prototype aqua-thermal system to heat and cool the main building.

The project aims to evaluate the economics of harnessing the renewable thermal energy stored in water bodies of a lake.

DELWP, in consultation with local user groups and the community, will work on a masterplan for this whole precinct, including the National Water Sports Centre and adjacent public land on the Patterson river.
