Local Engineering Construction Activity Leads Nation

26 September 2018

Engineering construction activity in Victoria grew more than anywhere else in the nation over the year to June, increasing in value by $1.2 billion.

New national data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the value of engineering construction activity in Victoria increased by 36.8 per cent over the year to a total value of $4.3 billion.

This increase represents the largest boost to the value of engineering construction activity of all the states, with national growth falling 5.2 per cent over the year.

The largest increase in activity in Victoria was in bridges, railways and harbours (up $711 million) and roads, highways and subdivisions (up $460 million) – boosted by the Andrews Labor Government’s record infrastructure pipeline.

Since the Labor Government was elected in November 2014, engineering construction activity in Victoria has grown 74.5 per cent – more than in any other state or territory over the period.

By comparison, the national average growth over the four-year period has decreased by 16.2 per cent.

During that same time, the Victorian economy has piled on 370,000 jobs – more than a third of all jobs created in the nation.

Victorian government infrastructure investment will reach $13.7 billion in 2018-19, with a total of $78.9 billion in state capital projects commencing or underway.

Quotes attributable to Treasurer Tim Pallas

“This is another great result for the Victorian economy, which ultimately means more jobs for Victorians in every part of the State.”
