Labor Government Building Suburbs For Families

28 August 2015

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne has revealed Melbourne’s next suburb, announcing Rockbank in the city’s west will one day accommodate more than 25,000 people

Mr Wynne joined Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz to announce Rockbank as a new suburb, which will include almost 8000 new homes and a major town centre adjacent to Rockbank train station.

The town centre will encourage new business and jobs, while providing social services and public space to serve as the social heart of the community.

The plans, which cover 752 hectares and will be available for community consultation, show where future schools, road upgrades, parks and community facilities will be built, recognising the need for a better coordinated approach to planning in Melbourne’s booming outer suburbs.

The suburb will be bounded by the Western Freeway to the north, Paynes Rd to the west and Greigs Rd to the south.

The Andrews Labor Government is already assessing applications for its $50 million Interface Growth Fund, which was set up to urgently address the community infrastructure backlog left by the previous Liberal Government.

More than 50 new suburbs have been delivered through the state’s greenfield program since 2006, helping Victoria to keep pace with Melbourne’s thriving population.
