Jobs And Infrastructure Top Agenda In Visit To Vietnam And China

20 October 2019

Victorian jobs and infrastructure will headline the agenda, as Premier Daniel Andrews undertakes a four-day visit of Vietnam and China this week.

Victoria’s relationship with both countries is forging ahead, with the trip an important opportunity to strengthen our engagement in the region.

This will be the Premier’s first official visit to Vietnam, where he will visit Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, and his sixth official visit to China where he will visit Beijing.

Victoria has deep community ties with Vietnam, with more than 108,000 Victorians with Vietnamese heritage. The two-way trade relationship was valued at $2.3 billion last year, while 42 per cent of Vietnamese student enrolments in our country come to Victoria.

Victoria’s close relationship with Vietnam is reflected in RMIT University set to celebrate its 20th year with a campus in Vietnam in 2020. The Premier will seek to build on these close ties, with a focus on tourism and education.

While in Beijing, Victoria’s record $107 billion infrastructure pipeline will be front and centre at an infrastructure roadshow with Chinese construction companies and investors.

As Victoria’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade valued at more than $26 billion, the visit to China will also be an opportunity to hold high-level discussions with Chinese officials about the Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative signed between the Victorian Government and the National Development and Reform Commission in 2018.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“Victoria’s person-to-person ties with Vietnam continue to go from strength to strength – we want to take this further and see great opportunities for even more cooperation in tourism and education.”

“My sixth official visit to China will promote Victoria’s record infrastructure pipeline, while building on the close relationship our state has with our biggest trading partner.”
