The Andrews Labor Government is improving fencing at the Dunkeld Racecourse to boost safety for jockeys, horses and trainers.
Minister for Racing Martin Pakula today visited the Dunkeld Racecourse to announce the installation of kangaroo-proof perimeter fencing and plastic running rails at the racetrack.
The government is contributing more than $47,000 towards the upgrades from its Victorian Racing Industry Fund, as part of the $94,000 joint fencing project.
Dunkeld Racing Club is providing more than $10,000 for the perimeter fencing, and Racing Victoria is providing almost $37,000 towards the plastic running rails.
The new perimeter fence will replace more than 2.5 kilometres of existing fencing and gates, with a 1.8-metre high kangaroo-proof barrier. The fence is expected to be installed by the end of the year.
Safety has also been boosted at the track with the recent installation of plastic running rails, part of Racing Victoria’s project to replace wooden and metal rails across all Victorian thoroughbred racecourses.
The state-wide rollout has seen plastic running rails recently installed at St Arnaud and Mortlake racecourses, and at training tracks at Mornington and Flemington.
Since 2014, the Labor Government has contributed almost $66,000 to Dunkeld Racing Club to support the major race day and three infrastructure projects.
The racing industry in the Western District generates more than $100 million for the Victorian economy every year and helps sustain more than 980 jobs in the region.
