Housing And Education Renewal In North Melbourne

21 August 2017

The Andrews Labor Government’s renewal of a North Melbourne public housing estate includes provision for much-needed, new education and arts facilities, helping relieve pressure on inner city schools.

As part of the development, North Melbourne Primary School will use some of the land to expand and upgrade its learning facilities over coming years to meet increased student demand.

A long-term vision for the site, which will include the proposed education facilities and a performing arts centre, will be developed in consultation with the broader community and educators.

The North Melbourne Renewal Project is part of the Labor Government’s $185 million investment to redevelop public housing properties at sites across metropolitan Melbourne.

The existing buildings on the site were constructed in the 1960s without lifts, making them inaccessible for residents with disability or mobility issues, and unsuitable for older residents and families with young children.

The renewal project replaces rundown, ageing low-rise properties with a mix of apartments and townhouses that meet relevant building and energy efficiency standards.

The North Melbourne project will replace the existing 112 units with modern living facilities, providing at least 10 per cent more social housing. Every tenant will have the right to return to the property when completed.
