From this Wednesday, trains will run beneath Campbellfield’s Camp Road for the first time, completing a month-long construction blitz five days ahead of schedule.
Upfield line trains will now travel through a new underpass that has replaced the dangerous and congested Camp Road level crossing for good.
The rail line will open five days ahead of schedule – just two weeks after the road above reopened to traffic.
The construction blitz, which involved up to 300 workers, removed the crossing, built a new road bridge and dug an 870-metre-long rail trench by excavating 30 Olympic swimming pools of dirt.
The Camp Road level crossing was one of Melbourne’s worst – causing frustration and delays for 30,000 drivers every day.
The removal of the boom gates has increased traffic flow, making the road and surrounds safer for all users.
Landscaping and finishing touches are expected to be complete in early 2018.
The Andrews Labor Government is not wasting a moment getting rid of dangerous and congested level crossings – 11 crossings are already gone, with another 16 removals underway.
