Geelong Council Monitors Update

21 February 2019

The role of Municipal Monitors at the City of Greater Geelong will shift to a ‘watching brief’ in recognition of progress since the appointment of the monitors nearly 18 months ago.

Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek has announced the change today, which will reduce the costs for ratepayers and still enable regular governance support and advice for the council.

The council has made progress to address the Commission of Inquiry recommendations – which are now around 80 per cent complete.

Monitors Jude Munro AO and Peter Dorling will remain in place until 2020 and hold quarterly meetings with the council and other relevant stakeholders.

The Geelong community will continue to receive quarterly progress updates from the monitors and council.

The monitors were appointed to work with the council following a Commission of Inquiry and have been working to implement the commission findings, oversee a new governance framework and oversee plans for a transformation program and 30-year vision.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek

“Jude Munro and Peter Dorling have done an outstanding job as municipal monitors in helping the Geelong Council restore good governance for its local community.”

“A strong and prosperous Geelong is important to Victoria and I want to make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure the Council moves forward.”
