Funding Boost For Regional Waste Initiatives

04 October 2017

Businesses and local government in regional Victoria will get a major infrastructure boost to help them drive economic growth, create jobs and keep problem waste products out of landfills.

$5 million will go towards regional initiatives so groups can expand their operations to recover valuable products and reduce waste going to landfill.

Round two of funding for the Resource Recovery Infrastructure Grant was announced today by Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio, who unveiled the first round of grants in July this year.

This second round of grants will benefit regional initiatives and delivery of the Statewide Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan and six Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plans across Victoria.

The Andrews Labor Government is providing support to large-scale infrastructure projects to reduce Victoria’s dependence on landfills, create new jobs and drive investment in communities.

Sustainability Victoria is overseeing the grants, including the 14 projects from round one, all of them managing waste from metropolitan Melbourne.

One project turns plastic bags into things like park benches, decks and bridges; another will use a state of the art washing facility to treat problematic materials; another to recover organic food waste with the help of dehydration units – all will reduce landfill by over 200,000 tonnes a year and create 90 new jobs in Victoria.
