The fourth train for the north east line is now in service, boosting comfort and reliability for local passengers.
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan welcomed the introduction of the new train – part of the Andrews Labor Government’s boost to rolling stock for Victoria’s north.
Previously, three five-carriage trains operated on the north east line – the bare minimum required to operate the three return services that run between Melbourne and Albury each day.
This meant that if a train had to be taken out of service for maintenance or repairs, there was no option but to put passengers on coaches.
The fourth train, which entered service today, will provide an extra train for the north east line – meaning there is one in reserve if anything unexpected happens.
The Labor Government has also refurbished the interior of the train – reupholstering seats, laying new floors and giving the carriages a fresh lick of paint.
The train also has new toilets and handrails, making it more accessible for people with disabilities, and is the first in V/Line’s long-distance fleet to be covered in the purple, white and yellow Public Transport Victoria livery.
The upgrades are part of the Labor Government’s $15 million investment in better trains for the north east line, which will also refurbish the remaining three trains, and plan for the next generation of rolling stock for northern Victoria.
