Construction of the foundations for the brand new Carnegie Station will start in January as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $1.6 billion Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project.
From mid-January, construction crews will begin building the foundations of the new elevated station and rail line that will remove nine of Victoria’s worst level crossings and create space for more trains, more often on Victoria’s busiest rail line.
To enable these works to occur safely and efficiently, the existing Carnegie Station will close for eight weeks.
From 16 January to mid-March, Cranbourne and Pakenham line trains will run express between Caulfield and Murrumbeena, and buses will run between these stations for passengers travelling to or from Carnegie.
When piling is complete, construction crews will rebuild the temporary station so passengers can keep catching the train.
On top of removing every level crossing between Dandenong and the city, the project will build five new stations and create 22.5 hectares of new parkland, paths and public open space.
Combined with the Labor Government’s multi-billion investment in high-capacity trains and signaling, the project will create space for more services and 11,000 extra passengers on Melbourne’s busiest train line.
It’s part of the Labor Government’s record investment in public transport, which includes more than 100 new trains, high-capacity signaling and the Metro Tunnel, which will create space for more services across Victoria.
