Delivering A Design Centre Of Excellence For Geelong

14 August 2018

Design students at The Gordon TAFE will soon have access to extra training and a new learning space thanks to a funding boost from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney and Member for Geelong Christine Couzens today visited The Gordon to announce $998,000 for a new project to establish a Design Centre of Excellence at the TAFE.

The Centre will enable students from diverse fields such as engineering, advanced building and design, fashion, ICT, and graphic design to work collaboratively on industry-based design challenges.

The project also includes curriculum and training resources, the establishment of four new accredited units and the development of new opportunities for applied research projects and industry mentoring for students.

The Design Centre of Excellence project is being led by The Gordon in partnership with Cotton On Group, Austeng Engineering, 3iD Architecture, and Goop Digital.

To make it easier to access training, the Government is investing $172 million to make 30 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses that lead to jobs that are most in demand from Victorian employers tuition free.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 is investing an additional $644 million to strengthen TAFE, address skills shortages and ensure all Victorians can access the training they need to get a good job.

The former Liberal Government decimated our TAFE system – cutting funding, sacking teachers and closing campuses. We’ve turned that around and we’re continuing to invest in TAFE to make it even bigger and better than before.
