Delivering 24-Hour Medical Care For Phillip Island

17 December 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering on its commitment to make sure Phillip Island locals and holidaymakers can get the treatment they deserve, round the clock, on the popular Island this summer.

Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos today announced the Phillip Island Health Hub will be on hand for when people get sick or injured in the middle of the night or when something’s not quite right with a child, with free medical care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The new arrangement will begin from December 24 – in time for the peak summer period.

We’ve already said we will build a flagship new Community Hospital in Cowes at the Phillip Island Health Hub, and we’ve listened to the community, who tell us they want the peace of mind that 24-hour care is there when they need it most.

The Labor Government will make sure a doctor and nurse are stationed day and night while we get on with delivering the urgent works required so that the Phillip Island Health Hub can offer a greater range of services.

As part of the works, the Phillip Island Health Hub will be fitted with purpose-built cubicles for privacy, wash basins for patient safety, and the ability for doctors and nurses to administer vital medicines. Those works are expected to be complete early next year.

As well as 24-hour urgent care, the new Community Hospital will feature pharmacy services, renal dialysis, diagnostic imaging and pathology services and public dental services. The Community Hospital will also have family violence support services.

It’s all part of the Labor Government’s $675 million fund to build and upgrade community hospitals in our suburbs and regional towns.

“We’ll roster a doctor and a nurse on at Phillip Island Health Hub in time for the summer peak period –while we get on with the works that need to be done at the Health Hub.”

Quote attributable to Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale

“This is Labor getting it done for Phillip Island families and visitors. We’ve listened and we’ve acted – and now patients will have peace of mind that help is just around the corner when they need it most.”
