Christmas Comes Early For Victorian Ratepayers

21 December 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is once again protecting Victorians from unfair council rate hikes by restricting any increase to a maximum of 2.25 per cent for 2018/19.

The cap matches both the forecast Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the advised limit from the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

In 2015, the Labor Government delivered the Fair Go Rates System, limiting council rate rises to the CPI and ending the uncontrolled hikes seen across the state for a decade.

The Fair Go Rates System, now in its third year, encourages Victoria’s councils to produce financial plans that take into account the long-term needs of their communities.

Central to development of these plans is consultation with local communities to determine what services should be prioritised.

Councils seeking to exceed the rate cap can apply to the ESC for consideration. For more information on Fair Go Rates, including the advice of the ESC, visit www.delwp.vic.gov.au/fairgoratesExternal Link .
