Camp Road Boom Gates To Go By Christmas

03 November 2017

The boom gates at Camp Road in Campbellfield will be gone next month as work ramps up to remove another level crossing.

A month-long construction blitz between 15 November and 18 December will safely and quickly remove the dangerous and congested crossing by Christmas.

This massive construction effort will see up to 300 people working on the project at its peak. Work will include lowering the rail line under Camp Road, building the new road bridge and removing the boom gates for good.

During the intensive month of work, workers will excavate 85,000 cubic metres of soil to create the rail trench – equal to 30 Olympic swimming pools of dirt.

Two massive piling rigs, each weighing 100 tonnes, will also help prepare the road bridge foundations.

To enable the works to be undertaken safely and quickly, Camp Road will be closed at the level crossing from 9:00pm 15 November to 6:00am 30 November. Signed detours will be in place for road users during this time.

The Upfield railway line will be closed between Coburg and Upfield stations from 8.30pm on 16 November to 6:00am 18 December, with buses replacing trains.

When normal services resume on 18 December, trains will travel under Camp Road for the very first time, and the congested level crossing will be gone forever.

The project will be fully complete – including finishing touches and landscaping – by early 2018.

In just two years, the Andrews Labor Government has removed 10 level crossings, opened 12 new train stations and a further 16 level crossing removals are now underway.
