Building A Bigger, Better Monash Emergency Department

08 September 2019

The Andrews Labor Government is building a bigger, better emergency department at Monash Hospital to make sure more locals in Melbourne’s south-east get the world-class care they deserve, faster.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos today marked construction on the $76.3 million project, which will create a new emergency department with a devoted area for the treatment of children and a new mental health and drug and alcohol hub.

The cutting-edge new emergency department will feature an additional 24 emergency department beds and 10 extra short-stay beds for patients requiring care for less than 24 hours.

A trip to the emergency department can be stressful and scary for kids, but this project will make it that little bit less intimidating. Kids will be separated from adult patients, and treated in a calmer, more compassionate and less clinical environment.

The Labor Government will build kids emergency departments at Monash Hospital, University Hospital Geelong, Maroondah Hospital, Casey Hospital, Northern Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and Frankston Hospital.

The emergency department will now also include a separate 24-hour short-stay unit to treat more people with mental health or drug and alcohol problems in times of urgent need, as part of the Labor Government’s $100.5 million promise to build the units in busy hospitals across the state.

Similar facilities are being rolled out by the Labor Government at Sunshine Hospital, Frankston Hospital, St Vincent’s, University Hospital Geelong and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Patients will be assessed and treated by a specialist team with mental health and drug and alcohol expertise – ensuring they get the very best care, when they need it.

The Monash Hospital project will be complete by 2022.
