Boost For St Kilda City Gate Apartments

13 October 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is breathing new life into St Kilda’s City Apartments – funding a conversion of the existing rooming houses into safe, long-term homes for vulnerable people in the Port Phillip community.

Minister for Housing Martin Foley today visited St Kilda’s City Gate Apartments to announce the redevelopment project that will see the construction of 50 new units, as part of the Labor Government’s $799 million homelessness and social housing investment.

Those escaping family violence will be given first priority to live in the $18.4 million community housing project.

The transformation of the run-down site has been made possible by $13 million in grants from the Labor Government – including $8 million from the Victorian Property Fund, in addition to $5.4 million from the Port Phillip Housing Association.

The Port Phillip Housing Association has been providing affordable housing for vulnerable people in the area since 1986 and will oversee the redevelopment and manage the complex when it’s completed.

It will include 32 studio, five single-bedroom, 11 two-bedroom and two three-bedroom units and provide women on low-incomes, families escaping family violence and those at-risk of homelessness with secure accommodation.

Launch Housing will provide access to support services to tenants to ensure children stay in school and families affected by family violence are able to stay together.

An on-site office will also assist residents with maternal and child health, drug and alcohol, mental health and wellbeing services.

The first stage of redevelopment is expected to be completed by the end of 2018 with the project finalised by the end of June 2019.
