Bigger Somerville Stadium To Rise From Ashes

21 November 2017

A brand new four court stadium will be built in Somerville, after the old recreation and community centre was tragically destroyed by fire last year.

Minister for Sport John Eren joined local clubs, sporting associations and representatives from the Mornington Peninsula Shire on site today to announce $1.3 million to help rebuild and expand the stadium.

Last year’s fire devastated the sports-mad community, and the lack of indoor courts has taken its toll on all users of the former ‘Steelerdome’.

After months of consultation, plans to rebuild the stadium have now been finalised, and the Andrews Labor Government is proud to tip in the extra money to expand the old two court facility.

The new stadium will feature four multi-sport indoor courts, female friendly change rooms, an umpires change room, a first aid room, tournament office, as well as storage and car parking.

The redevelopment is a massive win for the Western Port Basketball Association, which is home to 130 teams and nearly 2,000 members.

The stadium is also home to the Western Port Steelers representative teams, and is used by the Baxter Indoor Netball Association and Mornington Peninsula Badminton Association.

The expanded facilities will give these players, groups and clubs more court space to attract more members and greater flexibility to schedule games.

The skate park will also be relocated so locals can continue to ride in a safe and challenging facility.

Construction is expected to start early next year and be complete before the end of 2018.
