08 June 2018

More than 200 masterpieces from the MoMA will be on display at the NGV from tomorrow – kicking off a city-wide festival of that will celebrate the culture and creativity of Melbourne and New York.

Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley joined the media this morning to preview MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art – the new blockbuster exhibition in the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.

Exclusive to NGV, the world premiere exhibition comprises over 230 masterworks from the prestigious Gallery, including paintings, drawings and photographs alongside furniture, textiles, graphic design and architecture.

The majority of pieces have travelled to Australia for the first time and almost half have never before been shown outside of MoMA.

Spanning the entire ground floor of NGV International, the exhibition includes works from some of the world’s biggest names in art – from Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo, to Cindy Sherman, Andreas Gursky, Kara Walker and Camille Henrot.

The exhibition will spread beyond the gallery through the MEL&NYC festival – a celebration of the strong cultural links between Melbourne and New York – across art, performance, comedy, film, food, ideas and live music.

The program includes local talent, secret laneway gigs, pop-up restaurants and keynote talks, as well as high-profile creative minds direct from New York including:

  • New York comedian, writer and actress Ilana Glazer (Broad City)
  • award-winning musician Regina Spektor
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ronan Farrow
  • guest chefs from acclaimed New York restaurant Momofuku

The Andrews Labor Government is a proud supporter of the MEL&NYC festival and MoMA at NGV – the largest instalment of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series to date. Since 2004, the series has attracted 5.7 million local, national and international attendees and generated around half a billion dollars for the state’s economy.

MoMA at NGV will be on display at NGV International from 9 June 2018 – 7 October 2018. Tickets and information are available via the NGV website: http://ngv.melbourneExternal Link .
