Better Access For Broadmeadows Passengers

10 September 2018

Broadmeadows passengers will benefit from a modern station, faster travel times and more trains thanks to works funded by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan and Member for Broadmeadows Frank McGuire today visited Broadmeadows Station, to inspect works underway to make it safer and easier for passengers to catch the train.

Four new myki readers will ease congestion - a critical improvement to what is fast becoming one of the busiest stations in Melbourne’s outer north.

Revamped toilets and a new ramp for the station entrance will also make the station more accessible for people using mobility aids, carrying luggage and for parents with young children and prams.

It comes as the Labor Government is building the Metro Tunnel, which will cut travel times on the Craigieburn line by ten minutes a day for passengers when it opens in 2025.

Work is nearly complete on removing the level crossing at Buckley Street in Essendon, while the Glenroy Road, Glenroy crossing will also be removed so more trains can run more often.

In addition to the station upgrade, traffic and pedestrian safety improvements have been completed at the Pascoe Vale Road and Dimboola Road intersection. The slip lane on Dimboola Road has been removed, and a new footpath and signalled turning lane for vehicles will provide better connectivity and safer access to the station for pedestrians and motorists.

The Broadmeadows Station pedestrian subway is also receiving a make-over including repainting and new lighting to improve safety for commuters travelling after dark, with all work at the station to be complete by early October.

The Government is also working on a business case to investigate further upgrades to Broadmeadows Station, to make sure the precinct meets the future needs of passengers.

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will get on with the planning for the Suburban Rail Loop, which will see a super-hub near Broadmeadows, better linking Victorians with services, education facilities and jobs.

“Over the coming weeks, passengers will see more improvements and better access to the station – and we’ve already started the work to explore what else can be done.”
