Assistance Announced For Severe Weather Victims

03 December 2017

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Victorian Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino today announced disaster assistance for Victorians affected by the severe weather over the weekend.

Minister Keenan said up to $1,890 per househouse was being provided immediately through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

People in the local government areas of Alpine and Strathbogie can claim up to $540 per adult and $270 per child (up to a maximum of $1,890 per household) to help meet immediate needs, including emergency food, shelter, clothing, and personal items.

“This severe weather event has had significant impacts on many communities across the state.” Mr Keenan said.

“Both the Australian and Victorian governments recognise the need for quick action to help those affected by the disaster.”

“Our governments are committed to working together to ensure that disaster affected communities receive support to help them recover.”

Mr Merlino said Emergency Relief Assistance Payments had been activated to help people in the worst affected areas.

“The relief payments are for people with immediate emergency needs,” Mr Merlino said.

“Assistance is also available to help with clean-up operations.”

“We will continue to assess the impact of this severe weather event and further assistance will be made available to affected communities as required.”

Anyone who has been affected by the severe weather and is suffering personal hardship and distress should contact their local relief centre or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.
