Applications Open For Disability Worker Commissioner

30 May 2019

A new leadership position charged with the task of safeguarding and improving the quality of care for people with disability is now open for applications.

Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Luke Donnellan today announced a recruitment drive for an experienced, passionate leader to establish and run the Victorian Disability Worker Commission, as part of the Disability Worker Registration Scheme to begin in July next year.

The Disability Worker Registration Scheme is being rolled out by the Andrews Labor Government, and is made possible by $9.45 million in the Victorian Budget 2019/20.

In addition to being responsible for registered disability workers, the new commissioner will play a key role in leading the commission and will work closely with the Victorian Disability Worker Registration Board.

The commissioner is also responsible for regulating the conduct and performance of unregistered disability workers, as well as receiving and responding to complaints about all disability workers. This also includes the power to ban unregistered disability workers if they breach a Code of Conduct.

The successful candidate will ensure that the Commission is responsive to community needs by providing information and educating the public about the conduct and care they can expect from disability workers. This includes maintaining a public register of disability workers, and information on prohibited workers.

Together, the commissioner and board will provide independent oversight and safeguards to ensure the public can confidently seek advice and make complaints about disability workers who do not meet the standards or mistreat vulnerable people.

Applications for this role close on 7 June 2019.
